Living in Sonoma County is a dream. With our many coffee shops and parks, there’s always sunshine on your face and the aroma of wildflowers. But, even in a sublime setting like Santa Rosa, real life finds a way in. Sometimes it’s in the form of a rock hitting your windshield and leaving a significant crack.
When this happens you want to get the job done right away but you also want to shop around to make sure you’re getting the best deal. While a real quote cannot be given without a technician seeing the damage, there are some factors that may affect the cost. These factors include the extent of the damage, the type of glass you choose, if your vehicle is equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and more. On average, the total cost for windshield replacement ranges from $300 to $500.
A damaged windshield can be a hassle, plus it’s dangerous to drive with your vehicle in that condition. You could get cited if the damage is obstructing the driver’s view. All of those are good reasons why you need to get that windshield fixed or replaced as soon as possible.
You may be thinking, “Who has the time?” Believe us, we understand. To help, we put this list of things to expect when getting your windshield replaced.
There are two types of services for windshield repair or replacement.
When choosing an in-shop service, you contact them, get an appointment, and bring your vehicle into the shop, where the technicians get to work either repairing or replacing your windshield.
When choosing a mobile service, you’re opting to have the technician come to you. This offers owners the convenience of not having to leave home or work.
Both of these services serve their purpose. Some car owners prefer going into a shop to have their windshield repaired or replaced. Others prefer to not leave their comfortable house and have the technician come to them. Whatever you prefer is fine, but it’s good to know that you have options.
No matter if you choose to bring your vehicle into the shop or have the technicians come to you, your vehicle is going to undergo a specific process to repair or replace that windshield. Below is a simplified version of what to expect.
The technician will take a look at the windshield damage. After inspection, they’ll decide if the crack or chip can be repaired. They may inform you that you do need a replacement after all. This may be disappointing when you were hoping to only deal with a repair, but some cracks just can’t be filled without obstruction of the driver’s view.
The tech will prepare and clean the area that is going to be repaired. Dust or debris can compromise the integrity of the windshield.
The technician will inject the chip or crack with a special resin. Then they’ll use a UV light to cure the resin.
The technician will clean up and check their work to make sure the integrity of the windshield has been restored.
The technicians will remove the windshield. This can be done by removing the adhesive that holds it to the car. They will use suction cup handles to take it out.
The technicians will clean the entire area including the slotted space where the previous windshield was sitting. Dust and debris can cause a problem with adhesives so this part is essential.
The technicians will apply the adhesive and then place the new windshield. They want to get it on as fast and carefully as they can so it will hold in place.
The technicians will remove the handles and tell you how long you need to wait before driving the car and how to maintain your new glass.
